Successfully Teaching Driving for over 18 years

Sarah Watson has been teaching Driving Skills in
Lutterworth and surrounding districts since 1992
During that time well over 1000 pupils have taken
their Driving Test with a pass rate of over 74%,
this puts her in the top 4% of Driving Instructors
in the country.
Sarah is a grade 5 driving instructor as measured by the Driving Standards Agency who regularly check an Instructors teaching ability.
"I passed 8 weeks after my 17th Birthday and can say that I learned a lot in every lesson" - Recent Student 2011"On every lesson I learnt so much" - Recent Student 2011
What should I look for when choosing my instructor?
You may find the information on the Governments web site useful.
Recent surveys indicate that nine in ten learners who passed both theory and practical tests first time were taught by an instructor. A fully qualified approved driving instructor (ADI) must display a green certificate on the windscreen of the car while teaching you.
Some trainee driving instructors are granted a licence so they can gain experience before their qualifying examination. In this case, the trainee driving instructor must display a pink certificate on the windscreen.
The DSA, as a government agency, is not allowed to recommend an instructor. They suggest that you ask friends and relatives to recommend someone they know. They suggest to try and choose an instructor who:
I also believe you should talk with the instructor before choosing, things you could ask
How long have they been teaching driving? I have been teaching for over 18 years
Will you be driving for the full hour during early lessons? With Sarah all lessons are for a full hour and you will drive on your first lesson hopefully getting up to 5th gear
Does the instructor allow you to practice in your own car? When the basic car control has been mastered (Usually after 5 lessons) “I encourage my pupils to practise providing the pupil is happy. I do recommend the person who will be accompanying the pupil to join us for a lesson to understand how they are progressing.” Remember the law has changed not every qualified driver can supervise a learner.
Will your instructor allow another person to accompany you for a lesson? “No problem but I will never have another pupil with us some instructors use this as a way of reducing their costs, this also means that as a pupil you spend your time driving the same route every time which does not prepare you for driving on your own to new places.
Everyone is different the quickest I have every taught was a 17 year old who took just 8 lessons this was unusual. My objective is as well as getting you successfully through your test, is to help to you to be a safe driver
After the first 3 lessons I will have a good indication of how long it will be before you can book your test.
Please remember that you have to have passed the theory test before you can book a test.
I have had several pupils who have needed to drive for their employment, so an intensive course was necessary. But rather than driving for several hours at a time say all morning or all afternoon which can be very wearing and so less effective. I plan intensive courses so you drive for an hour or 90 minutes then have a break which as well as being giving you a chance to rest you will also have an chance to digest what has been taught. Then another lesson then a break and so on, I have found this much more effective. One such pupil had a job offer which required him to have a driving licence and in less than 4 weeks from his first lesson he passed and started his new job the next day.
Because very few people have more than one instructor it is very difficult to compare and know how well you are doing. A good measure is if you don’t learn something new every lesson you are not progressing as quickly as you should do.
I offer Motorway lessons as well as being qualified to teach the Pass Plus scheme. You don’t have to have taken your test with me anybody can do the Pass Plus at any time. This scheme is highly recommended you will find that other drivers treat you differently once you have removed the L plate. Pass Plus and a motorway lesson will help improve you driving skills and confidence
No, you are never too old. One of the oldest new drivers I taught was a lady in her 50’s. She took the same amount of lessons as a 17 year old and passed her test first time. I have also given refresher lessons to people who may have passed their test but not driven for many years. My oldest pupil was a 74 year old who had not driven for 32 years after having had an accident and given up. When unfortunately her husband died she had a car but no confidence to use it. After a few hours of refresher lessons confidence back and she now drives where she wants when she wants.
Everyone is different; my objective is as well as getting you successfully through your test, is to help to you to be a safe driver and to help you achieve this as quickly as possible.

All the test centres have the same standards; most of my pupils take their tests in Hinckley. Once a Pupil had their Rugby test cancelled we managed to get a last minute booking for the next day in Coventry, she passed having only driven there for an hour before the test. When you are ready to take your test you should be ready to drive anywhere.
